Ford Motor Company was founded in Detroit in 1903 by the engineer Henry Ford. Today it is headquartered in Dearborn, Michigan, and Ford cars are among the best-known American cars in the world.
Ford history is closely tied to the Model T, launched in 1908, and to the moving assembly line introduced in 1913, which made the car affordable for ordinary families. In 1914 Henry Ford introduced the five-dollar working day. The F-Series pickups arrived in 1948 and went on to become America's best-selling vehicle line, followed by the Thunderbird in 1955.
The Mustang, unveiled in 1964, created the pony car class, while the GT40 won the Le Mans 24 Hours four years in a row from 1966 to 1969. Ford also built the Bronco, the Crown Victoria and the Econoline van, and it owns the Lincoln brand.
Ford remains one of the largest American car companies and still builds the Mustang, the F-150 and a revived Bronco. In Europe, Lithuania included, classic Mustangs and big V8 Ford pickups are especially popular with American car fans.
