Dodge history begins in 1900 in Detroit, when brothers John and Horace Dodge opened a machine shop. They first built engines and other parts for other carmakers, including Ford, and introduced the first car under their own Dodge name in 1914.
Both brothers died in 1920, and in 1925 the company was bought by the investment bank Dillon, Read & Co. In 1928 Walter P. Chrysler's corporation took over Dodge, and the make has been part of the Chrysler group ever since.
In the 1960s and 1970s Dodge cars became symbols of the muscle car era: the Coronet, the Charger (from 1966) and the Challenger (from 1970) with large V8 engines. The Viper sports car followed in 1992, and the pickups were sold as the Dodge Ram until RAM became a separate brand in 2010.
After Chrysler's mergers with Daimler and later Fiat, Dodge has belonged to Stellantis since 2021. It remains one of the best-known names among fans of American cars.
