Buick history began in Detroit in 1903, when Scottish-born inventor David Dunbar Buick set up the Buick Motor Company. The company soon moved to Flint, Michigan, where businessman William C. Durant took control of it.
Under Durant, Buick became one of the largest car makers in the United States, and in 1908 it was the foundation on which General Motors was built. Buick cars became known for their overhead-valve engines, which turned into a hallmark of the brand.
In the mid-20th century Buick sat between Chevrolet and Cadillac: the Roadmaster and Electra offered comfort, and the VentiPorts on the front fenders became a recognisable design feature. The 1963 Riviera is regarded as one of the most elegant American cars, while the turbocharged V6 Grand National and GNX of 1987 became collector favourites.
Today Buick remains a General Motors brand; in North America it sells mainly SUVs, while most Buick cars are now sold in China.
